Real Surveyors at Work!

DDN

Trigonometry class conducted a surveying project as part of a unit on sine, cosine, and tangent.  Students calculated the heights of a  nearby church steeple, and telephone pole.

Height of Church Calculation:
Angle of elevation: 7.5 degrees
Baseline distance 390 feet
Height of instrument 4.75 feet

h=390*tan(7.5)= 51.3 feet

Height of building = h + height of instrument
                          = 51.3 + 4.75 = 56.05 feet

Height of Telephone Pole Calculation:
Angle of elevation: 25 degrees
Baseline distance 50 feet
Height of instrument 4.75 feet

h=50*tan(25)= 23.3 feet

Height of building = h + height of instrument
                          = 23.3 + 4.75 = 28.05 feet
